Looking back on 20 years of disability rights
Twenty years ago today, the Americans with Disabilities Act took effect, and NPR's Morning Edition marks the occasion with two commentaries. Ben Mattlin, who was born with spinal muscular atrophy, tells the program that "when I was younger, it was legal to discriminate against people like me. . . . I've always used a wheelchair, and my hands are too weak to scratch an itch. My parents said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. It wasn't quite true." Deborah Peters Goessling, an associate professor of special education, says she's really learned about disability since being diagnosed two years ago with ALS. "I never realized how much one inch made a difference in my life."
