Business secrets of the Trappists
For more than 12 years, entrepreneur and writer August Turak has been going to a Trappist monastery in Moncks Corner, S.C., called Mepkin Abbey. As a monastic guest, he wears a habit and temporarily lives the life of a Trappist monk. Although he goes primarily for spiritual reasons, as a businessman and entrepreneur he is fascinated by the worldly aspect of the monastic life. In a four-part series in Forbes magazine, Turak says business executives everywhere should be learning from the monks.

In part 3 (not linked here, but accessible via our Spark above) Turak tells of asking Mepkin's former abbot Francis Kline how the monks managed to get so much done, while worshiping 7 times a day. "We just trust the process," he responded. "This is a 1500 year old tradition, and we trust the process." Stanley Hauerwas recently quoted Stuart Henry, a divinity professor of blessed memory: "The Catholic Church is very old and very wise." Why's it seem more poignant that Fr Francis and Stuart Henry are both dead, and now other people pass on their stories? That's tradition, done right, back thousands of years, and worth dying in.
